Home Remedies for Ringworm

"Ringworm" is the common name for the skin infection caused by a special group of fungi; it is not caused by a worm at all. The fungi feed upon the dead cells of skin and hair causing, in people, a classic round, red lesion with a ring of scale around the edges and normal recovering skin in the center. Because the ring of irritated, itchy skin looked like a worm, the infection was erroneously named.

Caused by organisms called dermatophytes, ringworm can infect the skin, hair, nails and feet. You will know that you have ringworm of the skin if you develop a rash that looks red and patchy then develops into multiple red rings that may be scaly or itchy.

There are many home remedies for ringworm that people claim to be effective, but most of them are not scientifically tested.

One of these methods is to apply salted sea water on the spots with the ringworm fungus on them. This water will absorb all the moisture from that area and ringworm cannot live in dry areas. In order for it to work is should be kept more than 30 minutes.

The seeds of butea are effective in treating several skin problems including ringworm and eczema. A poultice of the leaves is prepared and applied on the affected regions.

First home-spun ringworm treatment - use of ordinary kitchen vinegar and a penny. Soak the penny in the vinegar and rub on the affected area. Some even recommend taping the penny to the ringworm spot. Others use vinegar without the penny. The reasoning of those who use the penny-vinegar combo is that the vinegar reacting with the copper actually serves as an effective fungi-killer.

Ringworm itself spreads really quickly. The fungus is passed from person to person through a skin to skin contact or by touching ringworm infected objects. It is a very common case that ringworm passes to humans from animals. Especially those who spend a large amount of time outdoors.

Skin treatments need to be taken for at least 4 weeks to cure ringworm. On occasions these may not work if the ringworm is too far under he skin. Creams can't penetrate the skin deep enough to kill all of the ringworm if it's too far under the skin. This leads to chronic ringworm that can become resistant to the treatment. An oral treatment can then be required and also a coricosteroid treatment to help relieve your symptoms.

Skin fungal infections are usually curable in about 4 weeks with a prescription medication. If the ringworm is not treated successfully with the anti fungal cream then an oral drug will be prescribed and to relieve the symptoms of the ringworm a coricosteroid cream may be prescribed as well.

When you see the ringworm symptoms appearing on your skin, you can stop their spread naturally by observing the following natural ringworm remedies:

Get rid of ringworm by applying a mustard seed paste on the infected regions. Use a mixture of turmeric and honey to disinfect your skin from ringworm. Rub slices of raw papaya on the ringworm patches for effective results. Crushed Holy Basil leaves are a good domestic treatment for ringworm.
